    I was trying to connect to a web application hosted on Windows Server 2008 R2 (using Remote Desktop Services) from a Windows XP computer with Service Pack 3 installed, and I got the following error:

    The remote computer requires Network Level Authentication, which your electronic devices do not support.

    To resolve this issue, first download Windows XP Service Pack 3, and then follow these steps to enable Network Level Authentication:
    1. Open the registry (click Writer Start > Run > key regedit > press ENTER)
    2. Locate the registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlLSA
    3. In the details, right-click Security Packages and select Replace with.
    4. In the Value field, leave many of the existing entries and add a new entry by typing tspkg. Click OK.
    5. In the Navigation Pane, locate and click the registry immediately after the subkey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlSecurityProviders
    6. In the details pane, right-click SecurityProviders and select Edit.
    7. In the Value Data Type field, enter credssp.dll. LeaveEnter the latest data, then click OK.
    8. Close the registry editor.
    9. Restart your computer.

    When connecting to a Windows 2008 server via Remote Desktop from a Windows XP Essential client with Service Backpack 2 or earlier, you receive the following error message:

    The remote computer does need network authentication, which your computer does not support.

    To enable NLA on XP machines; Install XP SP3 first, then change the registry settings in the XP calculator client to disable NLA

    1. Click Start, Run, type regedit and press Enter.

    6. In the details pane, right-click SecurityProviders and select Edit.
    7. In the Value Data Type field, enter credssp.dll. Leave any data that differs from other SSPs, then click OK.
    8. Close the registry editor.
    9. Now restart your computer.

    To resolve this issue, ensure that Windows XP computers have the latest version of the RDP client installed. Currently, the maximum version of RDP that a client can install on Windows XP is RDP 7.0 (KB969084 – https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/scstr/2012/03/16/download-remote-desktop-client- rdc-7-0-or-7-1-download-remote-working-protocol-rdp-7-0-or-7-1/). This update can only be installed on Windows XPSP3. Installing RDP from a version 8.0 or earlier client is not supported on Windows XP.
